After almost a year of injury, as one of the youngest players on the Sheffield Sharks, Marko Backovic will make a return to the court in time for the 2018/19 season.

Affectionately termed as the “Enforcer”, for his physical strength on the floor, Backovic suffered a complete lateral tear of his right ankle ligament early in the 2017 season and was forced to stop play pending surgery.

The disappointing break occurred after a promising start to the season which was planned to show his increasing contribution and minutes on the floor, as his development with both the Sharks and Sheffield Hallam University continued.

The SHU undergraduate is keen to make a return to the court and has been undergoing intense rehabilitation under the supervision of Sharks Physiotherapist Stacey Shepherd.

“This has been my longest break from shooting a basketball in 10 years,” said Backovic. “I can’t wait to get back to the floor I feel much stronger and a lot more confident on my ankle than I have in many years.”

With a raft of new signings, Marko will be amongst some experienced athletes to assist his return to the game.

“I’m excited, obviously it’s good to have returnees like Rob, Chris and Tuck but there will be some new faces who have all got experience within the game to make for an interesting year.”

Coach Lyons was pleased to see the speed of Markos recovery and welcomes his return after 9 months out of the game.

“I am happy to see Marko back in action, he brings a high basketball IQ, he can really get people involved and he is definitely developing his offensive arsenal, so we will see how that goes with a healthy ankle!” Said Coach Lyons.
